Don’t know how other bloggers get anything done besides blogging! Anyway, without a doubt, the biggest news story of the day at Citi-Field, where the Mets are currently playing their first game tonight against the Boston Red Sox in exhibition, is the fact they have added Gary Sheffield. The details are in this piece from The Star-Ledger, which includes a video link to Omar Minaya’s press conference announcing the deal.
I’m of mixed emotions on this, since Sheffield has never been a favorite of mine, but I think for the money he is worth the risk. It sounds like he is going to play more in right than left, which has to make Daniel Murphy heave a sigh of relief. I also think Church is probably better suited to share some time. Minaya says that Jerry Manuel, who coached Sheff with the Marlins in 1997, spoke to the hitter to clarify how Manuel will use him. The key will be giving Sheffield some time to get his legs in shape to play the outfield after years of DH’ing. The National league will help. Some teammates that don’t absolutely need him, but want him will help. And Sheffield having something to prove will help. Oh, yes, this move also keeps him away from the Phillies.
My picks for the season are coming. This might help the Mets in my mind.
