A couple of weeks ago, Michael Street and I particiapated in the Baseball Digest Daily Dream Draft. All the rounds aren’t up yet, it seems, but I thought I should give a shout out to it, because it was a great experience for me. I approached it very differently than fantasy baseball, where certain offensive categories take precedence over any kind of defensive categories. Though in real life I would never take Adam Dunn , I might in fantasy, where the fact that he can’t catch a ball is completely irrelevant.
As someone that is just growing into the industry, my voice often comes from the fan perspective. I value that, and I think you do too. While I understand how the business works, you rarely will see me offer up serious analysis of what should happen, only why it should happen. I’m not a stat head, never will be, though I understand them pretty darn well. The exercise with BBDD helped me focus in on the place where stats and intuition come into play. It also really brought home how risky betting on anyone player actually might be. One early pick that breaks his leg, or tears his labrum, well… that pretty much is going to leave you at the back of the pack for a number of years. And yet, there really is nothing you can do to make sure that those things don’t happen.
When the final info is up, I will link back through, but certainly don’t hesitate to tell me what you think of my draft so far.
