Interestingly, the Colorado Rockies have hired Don Baylor as hitting coach. Baylor served as the original manager for the franchise, and lead the team to its first post-season in 1995. He had been working as a roving coach for the team since mid-summer, but, it seems was recruited by the current manager Clint Hurdle to join the staff full time when changes needed to be made at the end of the season. Many are speculating, including Denver Post columnist Troy E. Renck that Baylor could assume the managerial reigns should the team feel the need to fire Hurdle mid-way through the season. The Rockies have to fix their pitching significantly before one can see blaming Hurdle, but it could easily be a move for Dan O’Dowd (Rockies GM) to save his own job if it comes to it. Baylor could be just the right person, as he already has a relationship with Todd Helton from his first stint with the Rockies, and it sounds like Helton has huge respect for the man.
