Goodbye to Shea!

Last night was my final game at Shea Stadium. I know, they could still make the playoffs, and then I will be back, but in my heart it was the last game. It was the last time I will sit in section 2 of the mezzanine, with the characters I have come to expect.  Fred the curmudgeon who often expects the worst; Kent the most easy-going lover of the Mets;  Michael, this weeks trivia winner who talks way too loud  and often says the craziest things, perhaps to see if anyone is listening– We all hear you Michael; and the fellas to my right,  Vinny, Jimmmy, Marcus, Sammy, Kenny and Eddie, who though I never see them outside of games have become truly neighbors that you check in on and see what’s up.  We cheered together, and we cheered each other when there wasn’t much to cheer about on the field.  Last night looked like the players themselves are ready for the season to be over. If they play into October, section 2 will become an overflow press section and the regular fans will be scattered around the stadium, in the seats that aren’t occupied by full season holders.  Next year, in the new stadium we expect the same will happen. So though I have many memories of Shea, its not the building I will miss in anyway.  Its these guys that have become a weekly part of my summers.  They are as much a part of what I do here as any player or any fan I have met in the past six years. Tip of the cap to all of you!
