Well, for all the talk this past week about Santana living up to the hype, about Santana earning his money, of Santana doing his job, well, those watching the Mets/Phillies/Brewers race may have taken little notice of that other race. The race for AL Central, which took a big turn last night. The Twins moved into first by beating the White Sox, and who was at the center of the victory? The piece that the Twins got for Santana. Sure no one on the east coast misses Carlos Gomez, but this Kelsie Smith piece tells anyone listening that Gomez is the man. Just as Santana is momentum changing, Gomez is game-changing. With Terry Ryan retiring last year, Bill Smith stepping in as GM as many of the talented staff went on to work for the Reds and the Pirates, I thought there was no way Minnesota could sustain its knack for finding the next gem, the untapped talent. Yet with Carlos Gomez proves that the Santana deal was in no way one-sided. The Twins also received two other pitchers who will be major league ready next season. Of course, the season isn’t over in the central, but with the White Sox leaving Minnesota behind in the standings, well, it makes for an uphill climb. Sometimes it is the team that stays healthiest that wins, and that might just be the case in the Central this year.
