A History Making Day

I thought the post today would be all about Derek Jeter, who, if he hadn’t before, put his name into Yankee history lore yesterday by tying the number of hits that Lou Gehrig had at Yankee Stadium.  Its fitting that record bookends the history of the stadium, with the first holder being one of its first residents and its last holder being one of the last guys to play there.  That is history tied up with a big Navy Blue Bow.  Here is a link to perhaps an over dramatic story by Jeff Roberts that shows just how happy Yankee fans were to have something to cheer about.  With the team out of the race, if not officially, than for all practicality, games at Yankee Stadium have become nothing more than a chance to say good bye to the House that Ruth built. Anthony McCarron’s story gives a nice picture of what it means to Jeter himself.

But Jeter isn’t the only one who will go into the history books for his performance in a game yesterday.  In a game already unusual for its displaced home team, Carlos Zambrano pitched a no-hitter. Perhaps it was the one CC Sabathia had tried for a few weeks ago.  This one though was not left to a scorers decision. Phil Rogers story tells the tale, and gives Zambrano some credit for saying the right thing.  There are a few more quotes in this Paul Sullivan piece, including a moment when Big Z wishes the Cubs could get a new stadium, like the one the Brewers had.  No doubt, the roof helped, but he couldn’t say such a thing if he had just pitched a 1-hitter, even if it was the clinching game I suspect.  There was a moment though last night when destiny appeared to be on the Cubs side, exactly 100 years after the last time that destiny shined on the North side.
