When the Sports Pages began selling papers

So, there are a ton of stories out there with so much going on with weather and tight playoff races.  I am not going to talk about the Blue Jays anymore.  I am just going to root for them since it would be an amazing story.  I will probably get a few more posts up this morning, but wanted to give you this quick article from Alan Schwarz about Leonard Shecter.  Shector is the first guy to spill the beans about the goings-on off-field for baseball players.  This Schwarz piece really shows how quickly private lives ceased to be private, and how newspapers quickly saw a new way to sell papers.  It also explains why writers aren’t allowed on the team plane anymore.  Want to know why newspapers blow tiny stories into crazy controversies?  This is where it began. Though I don’t think newspapers need to be filled with hero worship stories, I do sometimes wish for simpler stories about the pastoral game.
