So I have been struggling every since posting yesterday, with what I actually think about this letter. On the one hand, I like that it occurred to someone in the front office that they needed to reach out to the fans, but on the other hand it was just a lot of hot air, that didn’t say much. Here is the deal, if they really want fans in the ballpark for the remainder of the season give a discount… cut prices on two to three days a week. Let folks come and they will spend plenty of money on concessions and t-shirts. Give the season ticket holders a refund, or better, an equivalent discount on next years ticket prices. That future discount has them committed to seeing games next year. The Reds remind me of the 2003 Mets, when Fred Wilpon said he hoped to play meaningful games in September, then raised ticket prices on those few pour souls who were in the stands in September of ‘03. You want us to believe you are care about us as fans, well, then do something that shows you are a part of the community and not just trying to get rich off the community.
Again, I know Walt Jocketty can’t give away his game plan, or he will be held hostage by other teams, so how do you send the signal to the fans, exactly the same way the fans send a signal to you. You affect their wallet, and you do that by making it easier for them to come to the ballpark then to go to a movie, you make it cheaper. When the Reds, or any other team do that, that’s when the fans will know you are serious.
Editors Note: Apparently, the next post didn’t get put live until this morning. I apologize for the confusion, and for the random scattering of thoughts contained therein.
