Well, the perfect thing will be announced at 2pm today to tie up yesterday’s pot and tie both articles together. The Tampa Bay Rays will announce that they have given a long term deal to Jamie Sheilds. More from the St. Pete Times Rays blog, which tells you a lot more about Jamie, who was 12-8 with a 3.85 ERA in his first full season. He also threw 215 innings, even though he missed his last 2 starts because the team was being cautious with his young arm. Also, his strikeout to walk ration was the second-best in the majors… and I am sure few of you knew who he was, right? Well, his deal is very smart by the Rays, because another season like that and he could be very expensive in arbitration, so sign him early even with some risk, and you get him cheaper because he will take less just to have some certainty about what he can make. Quoting from the St. Pete post, “In essence, the Rays would get cost certainty over the length of the deal and the potential for a bargain while Shields would get the security of guaranteed millions.”
