Mitchell Report and the upcoming season

Obviously, I don’t want you to fall in love with another blogger, but Pete Abraham is one of the best out there.  If you are a Yankee fan, and you don’t regularly read Pete, you are missing something.  Yesterday, he put up one of the greatest posts about the steroid mess. Do you know, depending on your team that we are about 34 days away from pitchers and catchers reporting?  If not, it might be because you have stopped reading about baseball and starting reading about depositions and congressional hearings and steroids.  As Pete points out, we should be talking about the rookies of next year, of coming prospects and repeating World Series teams.    The NL Champ Rockies signed Marcus Giles to a minor league contract yesterday.  They need a second baseman, and Giles needs a job after batting .229 last season for the Padres.  Colorado could help Giles’ power a bit, but his decline is so marked, it is doubtful it is a serious move. But we should be debating how close Jayson Nix, brother of Laynce Nix, is to becoming the everyday 2nd baseman for the team.  Was the Rockies presence on the big stage a fluke, or are they a power to contend with?  We shouldn’t even know who Rusty Hardin is.  So, was the Mitchell report a mistake?  Is there anyway that this can actually help baseball?  Again, I go back to the need for Selig to stand before the writers and say “I didn’t recognize the problem early enough and didn’t do enough to protect the game or the players, so blame me.  It doesn’t matter what Roger did or didn’t do, it was all my fault.”  I want to get back to baseball.  I want to get excited about 2008.  The closest I can get is to read Kevin Kernan write about Goose Gossage.  Hope it helps bring back an image of why we love this game.
