The Steinbrenners

Well, big news out of Tampa today, with the announcement that Jennifer Steinbrenner, daughter of George Steinbrenner will be divorcing Steve Swindal, the announced heir to the throne.  The 3 other Steinbrenner children are involved in the business but have never had as prominant a role as Swindal.  My sources have been telling me for years that Swindal’s role has grown significantly, and has been handling most of the day to day operations.  With Steinbrenner’s statement that his “family runs the Yankees with [him]” coming after a no comment from Swindal, clearly things are up in the air.  My sources have also been telling me that Steinbrenner’s health is fading.  That he isn’t at the office for long hours anymore, and doesn’t necessarily have his finger on the pulse of the operation.  Don’t get me wrong, nothing big is going to happen without him knowing about it, but there is a reason why we don’t hear from George as often as we once did, and its not that he trusts Cashman, its that he has to back off energy-wise.  The question Yankee fans should ask themselves is: Do any of the other children have the skills to run the Yankees?  If the sons are good enough, and want the job why was the son-in-law announced as George’s successor in June 2005? Swindal and his wife have two children together, so there is a chance in the name of family that Swindal remains closely aligned with the Steinbrenners despite the divorce. But if not,  if a lessor businessman steps in, will the dynasty disappear?  Will losing ways return to the Bronx?  That’s a big question, Yankee fans.
